Outdoor Clothesline Ban Project Laundry List

Strange article in the September 13, 2010 issue of People magazine. Apparently, people in Mechanicsburg, PA don't have enough to do. There is a big uproar over hanging laundry outdoors to dry. Some homeowners associations now have an HOA no clothesline rule.
One lady, Susan Taylor, in Bend, Oregon had her clothesline snipped during the night and was fined $1000 by her HOA.
The controversy of hanging clothes outside to dry is due to the curb appeal. No one wants to look at someone else's underwear. Craziness. I say if you don't like it, don't look at it. lol.
Hanging clothes outdoors, or even indoors, to dry saves a ton of energy, is less wear and tear on your clothes and gives you a bit of fresh air, if you dry them outside, which everyone these days can use.
My mother has always line dried her clothes outside. I hang the majority of my clothes on racks indoors, just because that's what I prefer doing.
There is a non-profit organization called Project Laundry List who's main goal is to promote line drying and cold water washing. They travel around the country encouraging people to conserve energy when doing laundry. From July 5 to December 4, 2011 they are doing a cross country bike tour to raise awareness on how to conserve energy like eat vegetarian, lower water heater temperature, unplug appliances when not in use, etc. The tour can be tracked at http://www.clotheslinesacrossamerica.org. Sounds cool.
The Project Laundry List Founder and Executive Director Alexander Lee will keep riding until given shelter and will fast until given a vegetarian meal, in honor of Doris "Granny D" Haddock She was a political activist from New Hampshire, who walked across the US from the ages of 88 - 90 to advocate for campaign finance reform.

More Ways to Conserve Energy

  1. It is amazing how much money and energy can be saved by making the switch from a dryer to a clothesline or clothes drying rack. I have not had a dryer for 2 years. My bills are much lower and the best surprise I had is that my clothes last much longer than they used to. All that lint that used to be in my dryer was my clothes falling apart.
