Food, Inc.

I watched a pretty incredible movie over the weekend called Food, Inc. Really sickening though. It's all about where your food, mainly meat, eggs and dairy, comes from. I think everybody needs to watch this.
Apparently there is a major monopoly in the food industry. All food comes from just a few suppliers.
Chickens are kept in houses with NO windows. They have been genetically modified so only plump chickens are produced. They reach a point where they are so plump, their legs can't hold them up and they fall over. The chicken houses are right full of chickens and poop, yuck. When it's time for slaughter, all chickens are taken, even the sick ones, which then go into the food supply.
Antibiotics and steroids are put in the animals food, which passes into the animal and then into you when you eat the meat. Gee and we wonder why people are becoming allergic to antibiotics and why there are drug resistant bacteria.
Cows are kept crowded in mud holes. When one cow gets sick, then they all get sick since they are standing knee deep in mud and poop full of bacteria, and that is how e-coli is spread.
The farmers who maintain these animals refused to be interviewed for the film. One who had previously agreed, backed out after being paid a visit from a representative from the food company they were a supplier to.
Some of these food companies' top officials are also officials in the FDA, so that protection we thought we were getting just isn't happening. Money is more important than keeping food safe to eat. Imagine that!
Animals are fed corn because it is cheap to produce and makes the animals fat, which gives more meat. High fructose corn syrup is derived from corn, in a laboratory, and is in pretty much every processed food from bread to ice cream to pickle relish to ketchup. The animals have been fed corn, so we are even eating corn when we eat meat. So crazy! Corn is high glycemic, which means it causes a huge spike in your blood sugar after you eat it. So basically, people are eating corn all day long. Now I know why people are so fat these days and why diabetes is running rampant.
One interviewed couple would rather buy an item from the dollar menu at a fast food restaurant, than pay $1.29 for a pound of broccoli. They just didn't know if they should buy the more expensive vegetables or the cheaper fast food because they needed the money to pay for the husbands medication! Simply unbelievable! They need to watch another documentary I will be blogging about soon called Food Matters to get the answer to that dilemma, lol.
Food, Inc. was a huge, eye opening film for me. Needless to say, I will no longer be buying meat from big name brand companies. I'm going to stick to a local shop. Being a vegetarian is starting to sound good.
I did notice that Walmart now sells organic ground turkey and chicken. I haven't bought it yet, but am going to look into the company producing it. Apparently Walmart really cares about their image and are starting to sell organic items. That's very good news from an unexpected company.
You have to be extremely careful of everything you eat and need to be very diligent about checking ingredient lists. You are what you eat is more than just a saying. It is the truth.
Food, Inc. is definitely a movie worth watching.
