Healing Powers of the Sun: Heliotherapy

I've been hearing a lot of news lately about how sunlight is actually good for you and does not cause skin cancer. Rather skin cancer is the result of not enough sunlight. We do know the sun provides the body with Vitamin D, which has become the cure all vitamin for everything from cancer to asthma to diabetes. Kind of makes sense in a way. No sun, no Vitamin D, leads to illnesses of all kinds. Sun gives Vitamin D, which keeps the body healthy.
Apparently, people who live closer to the equator, where there is more sun, have lower skin cancer rates. Those who live further north where there are more hours of darkness, such as Norway and Finland, have higher illness rates. Interesting.
All it takes is 10 - 15 minutes, 2 - 3 times a week to get adequate Vitamin D from the sun, without sunglasses and sunblock. Sunglasses block out important rays of the light spectrum required by the body. Sunblock contains chemicals which can cause even worse damage.
Using sunlight to treat illness is called heliotherapy. It was used in the late 19th to mid 20th century. Dr. Auguste Rollier was the most famous heliotherapist of the day. When he passed away in 1954, the pharmaceutical industry, aka Big Pharma, was becoming more prominent and so natural healing therapies fell to the wayside. Fortunately, many people nowadays are turning back to natural treatments, due to so many side effects from drugs.
Since learning about the healing powers of the sun, I make sure to get outside for a few minutes every morning, unless it's raining.
